CHAPTER 23
Octavius
The safehouse stood on its own plot of several acres on the shore of a stormy Lake Michigan.
All the Brotherhood safehouses had medical facilities, but normal medicine wasnât going to save Saint.
âWhat do we do? What can I do?â Jayden stood at the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the misty lake. âMy blood? Iâll feed him, I donât care how much he takes. I tried in the chopper, but I couldnât open a veinââ He hurried to the kitchen area and opened the drawers. âIf I cut my wrist, heâll smell the blood, right? And heâll drink. I can do thatââ
âStop.â Octavius slumped against the wall. If he sat down heâd struggle to get up again. Exhaustion had caught up with him, and the adrenaline from the fight with Mikalis had worn off an hour ago. He needed to think, but there wasnât time.
Jayden grabbed a knife. âIâll do it now.â
âHeâll kill you.â
He looked up. âHe wonât. Heâs always careful.â
Jayden didnât understand. âWhen heâs not dying, heâs careful. But right now, if he were to even wake long enough to recognize blood, heâll tear into you. Itâs not a choice, Jayden. Itâs what we are.â
âI canât just fucking stand here doing nothing!â He flung the knife onto the kitchen counter and thrust his hands into his hair. âGod damnit, Octavius. You donât get it. He saved me. I was lost, and he saved me. I canât do this fucking shit world without him.â He gulped a sob, stormed outside, slammed the door, and marched to the waterâs edge in the swirling mist.
Octavius did get it. Saint had saved him too, and he was only now beginning to realize how.
Heâd started out hating him, believing him to be nothing more than a blood-sucking nyk. But Saint was complicated, and far from the monster theyâd all been warned about. He was amusing and bold, and he cared. He even loved. He loved Jayden, and he had loved Mikalis. Nyks werenât like that. Saint wasnât a nyk. He was brilliant, powerful, compelling, irritating, handsome, enigmatic, and alluring in ways Octavius couldnât remember experiencing before.
But right now, he was fighting to survive a bite that should have already killed him.
There had to be something they could do. Some way to save him.
The venom was in his blood, in his veins, beating through his heart, trying to devour him beat by beat. He wasnât yet dust so that meant Saint was fighting it. If he was fighting the venom, then there might be a way to help him fight for longer.
If they could bleed him, and have him feed, it might dilute the venom enough for Saint to gain the advantage. But out of his mind with pain and starvation, Saint would grab the nearest warm-blooded living thing and drain it in seconds. That was Jayden, and Saint had done all this to save Jayden.
What if Octavius took Saintâs blood into him?
It would mean consuming venom. Swallowing venom was a lot less effective than having it
